Queensland’s 16 Hospital and Health Services (HHSs) provide integrated public healthcare to approximately 5.5 million people across a geographically diverse state. Services include acute hospital care, emergency medicine, community health, aged care, and public health programs.
Mental health services are a key component, delivering specialist assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery-focused care across inpatient and community settings. Care is provided through multidisciplinary teams including psychiatrists, allied health professionals, nurses, and peer workers, ensuring coordinated, person-centred, evidence-based practice.
Queensland Health is undertaking ongoing mental health reform, focused on improving access, strengthening community-based care, and enhancing integration across hospital, primary care, and non-government services, with a strong emphasis on trauma-informed and culturally safe practice.
For psychiatrists, this offers a diverse clinical workload and opportunities for involvement in system improvement within a progressive, collaborative public mental health system.
Why live and work in beautiful sub-tropical Queensland
Queensland is known for its relaxed, outdoor-oriented lifestyle and year-round warm climate, making it a highly appealing place to live. Residents enjoy an easy balance between vibrant city living and immediate access to some of the world’s most iconic natural environments.
The state offers extraordinary variety - from the beaches and surf culture of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, to the urban amenities, dining, and cultural precincts of Brisbane. Just beyond the cities, there are rainforests, islands, and the Great Barrier Reef, providing endless opportunities for weekend escapes, outdoor sports, and nature-based recreation.
Queensland also has a strong café and food culture, a growing arts and events scene, and family-friendly communities with good schools and a generally more affordable cost of living compared to many other major Australian cities. The combination of space, sunshine, and access to nature makes it especially attractive for those seeking a healthier pace of life without sacrificing urban convenience.
