To become an Anaesthetic Specialist, at least seven years in post-graduate training is expected. This includes two years of pre-vocational experience and five years in Specialist Anaesthetics training post-graduate.
Fellowship is gained in Australia and New Zealand from the specialist qualification known as Fellowship of Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists’ (FANZCA). Thanks to the excellent work of the ANZCA, Australia and New Zealand have one of the highest reputations in the world for having the safest anaesthetist standards, training and accreditation procedures. Only Fellows of ANZCA can use the trademark qualification of ‘FANZCA’, a world-wide recognised qualification trademark.
To gain the Fellowship of ANZCA, training and assessments are required within a timeframe of 7 years. The ANZCA training program for Fellowship is relevant to all practitioners that have completed their training in Australia.
Specialist Anaesthetics work across the full scope of practice including Anaesthesia for surgical and non-surgical procedures; including sedation and all forms of Anaesthesia; perioperative/periprocedural care and management; assessment and management of patients requiring analgesia, critical/intensive care, and patients in emergency and trauma situations.
