International Medical Graduates – Applying for Specialist Recognition of Australian College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM)

Before applying for a Specialist ICU Registrar job in Australia as an International Medical Graduate Specialist (IMGS), it is essential for your qualifications and experience to be evaluated by the CICM specialist training committee. The evaluation process aims to assess the ability of an IMGS to practise as an unsupervised Intensive Care Medicine at a comparable standard to that required of a CICM-recognised Fellow of the Australian College of Intensive Care Medicine.

For further information on how to commence the CICM specialists’ assessment process, go to the CICM specialist recognition for overseas trained Intensivist information page.

Pursuing a Fellowship in Intensive Care

To become an ICU Specialist, at least six years in post-graduate training is expected. This includes three years of basic training and three years of advanced training. The CICM provides detailed information for the training assessment requirements. The FCICM training requirements are relevant to all Practitioners that have completed their training in Australia.

This six year training program results in the award of the diploma FCICM, Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand.
